some of the best tournaments in Florida
The Florida Keys have some of the best opportunities for tarpon, bonefish, permit, shark, barracuda and so much more.
Some of the tournaments that I participate in yearly include:
Del Brown Permit Tournament: Guide to Grand Champion in 2009, 2011 & 2013. The Del Brown is a fly only permit tournament and the longest running tournament of it’s kind. Find more information on this event that happens annually in July at www.delbrown.com.
Cuda Bowl Flats Tournament: This tournament is a fun and reasonably priced tournament that commences the two days prior to Super Bowl Sunday. The tournament is a fun format and has attracted anglers of all abilities because in barracuda fishing anyone really has a chance to catch them and to win this event. Prizes are terrific and include gift cards to Hurricane Hole Marina. Some of our main sponsors include Yeti, Rapala, RIO Products, Montana Fly Company, Hatch Outdoors, Salt Life, Derek DeYoung Studios, Patagonia, the Angling Company, the Saltwater Angler, Simms, Chums & Beyond Coastal, Fly Vines, Sun Bum and The Florida Keys & Key West Tourism Council. Visit www.cudabowl.com for more info.
Redbone S.L.A.M.: Redbone is a terrific organization that has been raising money for research on Cystic Fibrosis for more than 20 years. Redbone has a great list of tournaments which include the Redbone S.L.A.M. and Redbone SuperFly in Key West each September. I have won the SuperFly numerous years including 2015.
I have participated as an angler in the Redbone Slam Tournament at Grand Slam Lodge in Mexico and the Big Yard Classic in Andros, Bahamas. Visit www.redbone.org for a complete list of tournaments or to donate to CF.
Smitty & Al’s Tarpon Bonanza: A fine group of gentleman with their own tournament designed to get good friends together each year for some fishing and fun in Key West. We’ve taken the tournament a few years and have subsequently been moved to a professional division along with my anglers. It’s a terrific event put on by some of the best guys I’ve met in my years of guiding here in the Keys.
