Kiteboarding

with Capt. Justin Rea
Kite surfing has become one of the most popular sports in the world.

Kiteboarding Key West

There are so many places to kite and in the Florida Keys you have the added beauty of the flats. Our islands run mainly east to west with Key West being at the end of the island chain that is accessible by car.

Key West Beach Locations for Kiting
For kiting when the winds are from the east, south or south west the beaches around Key West are an easy way to get out.

Smathers Beach welcomes kiters at the east end of the beach near the last jetty. Parking is easy along the road and there is plenty of room to set up and launch. For novice kiters be careful of the beach goers and the power lines along parts of Smathers Beach.

Smathers Beach does have bathroom facilities at the west end of the beach.

Higgs Beach is west of Smathers and is next to the White Street Pier. Kiters are welcome here but generally stay near the West Martello Tower area. There is ample room to set up and to launch. The entry to the water is a staircase which can be slippery. One a higher wind day there may also be more wave action near the White Street Pier.

Up the Keys there is access for kiting at Bahia Honda State Park at the very east end. It’s about a 45 minute drive from Key West. The park is beautiful and offers nice beaches and shallow water flats.

Getting out to the flats to Kite
We offer some ride-along trips for experienced kiters. We go out to Calda Bank off Key West when the winds come from the north. We also go to the backcountry flats and depart from Key West or Cudjoe Key Marina.

Ride alongs are subject to availability. All riders must be experienced and be able to stay up-wind.

  • Food and drinks – we have a cooler with ice on board.

  • Glasses, Hat and Sunscreen
